Scheduled Tasks - Eliminating Most is a Good Thing

$

We've all seen lists of services and advice on which to disable, etc., but something I don't see discussed much is the list of Scheduled Tasks.

In the Task Scheduler there is a huge tree of hundreds of tasks that Microsoft has preset to do various things.

Depending on your personal needs for Windows 10, many can be disabled.  Lo and behold, doing so makes your system more controllable, and less apt to override changes you've made.  It only makes sense.

This is my list of scheduled tasks, from my Win 10 test system which completely shuns cloud integration and Apps entirely.  It's set up for pure traditional desktop operation and it really works well:

Windows 10 TTK Tweak Toolkit

$

my onedrive share: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AkTVL_4WP_RZtiwzfLQeOd-oAqBk

There are a few freely available tools included which i claim NO CREDIT for, they are merely included for convenience, to save you time searching for and downloading them.

folders & descriptions:

my windows 10 tweak toolkit contains the following;

anti ransomware - disable services that are a security risk (smb, workstation, bowser etc)

appx - uninstall windows 10 default apps via pshell

dcom - free tool to disable a few old security holes in windows, merge the included reg file first

disable eventlog & gpsvc - if you want you can disable event logging and the group policy service with no ill effects, other than not being able to view system logs (not that they help much)

disable tcpip6 - disable tcpip6 which isn't required at the moment

Driver DisabledComponents Tweak - should keep unused network protocols off

networking - uninstall unneeded network protocols from active adapter

permissions - emtpy while i compile new list (disables various apps like cortana, mobsync from loading at logon, much safer than removing packages, just removes file permissions)

Reduce Window Border Padding - free tool to reduce window boarders

Registry Tweaks - disable various logging, traces, swap file (not page file), uac etc

Svchost Process Tweak - returns svchost back to the old grouped processes, saves memory and reduces running processes (how often does svchost crash?)

files included are pre-made for 2gb, 8gb, 10gb, 20gb

System & Boot Tweaks - enable bcd legacy features, disable driver sig enforcement (enables test signing, only found one thing that didn't like that, battle eye anti cheat), disable compression, encryption

enable trim on ssd, old f8 menu, boot menu, disable boot logging, disable NX

Task Scheduler - my personal batch that disables 99% of windows tasks but textservicesframework

remember to take ownership of the Tasks folder first, then finish up with Autoruns in the portable apps folder to disable the tasks that got ACCESS DENIED because of permissions

Telemetry Blocker - free tool and pshell script to disable telemetry and block services in firewall

Timer Resolution Tweak (1.0-0.5) - free tool / script, reduces windows timer resolution from 1ms to 0.5ms, supposed to reduce micro stutters in games, reduce dpc latency

Tweaked Services - my personal batches to disable various windows services & driver services, use with caution, check what you need before blindly running the batches.

Windows 10 Regressions

I think maybe xpclient started a topic like this once, but I don't see it, so...

Please list the things Windows 10 doesn't do FOR YOU as well as it used to, and which make Windows 10 simply unacceptable for you to use.

It would be cool if you'd list any workarounds you've found/implemented as well...

Here's a brief start, with the most obvious things from my list:

  • The ATI folks have dumbed down their display drivers they're preparing for Windows 10 so that functionality I found essential (per-channel color calibration and preset management) is just missing.  Since I develop color-managed software I have a need for a very configuration, and I cannot achieve it with Win 10.  There is a rumor that the drivers for a MUCH more expensive workstation graphics card still offer these features, but those drivers traditionally lag behind those for the mainstream cards, and probably will eliminate the features sooner or later.

  • Microsoft keeps releasing updates or upgrades that revert key things and cause new problems.  Huge numbers of settings/tweaks, including some privacy settings, got reverted during the 10586 and 14393 upgrades, yet even small things get reverted during updates.  For example, I absolutely DON'T want "Desktop" showing up under "This PC" in Explorer, yet back it comes after a Windows Update.

  • The desktop "flat, borderless, lifeless" look and feel, well, there's no other way to put it:  Sucks.  Even beyond the aesthetics, who thinks borderless windows actually work right?  Have you seen the edge of a window just showing behind the edge of a borderless window, and want to click it but can't?  Aero Glass for Win 8+ helps a lot with the aesthetics, but it doesn't re-theme the controls.  A 3rd party theme would probably help, but I haven't taken the time to figure out what works yet.  The worst of it is that these things get re-broken by Microsoft on a regular basis, so finding an acceptable tweak isn't permanent.  And I'm sorry, but their default look and feel isn't usable.

I have many more things on my list, but these will serve to get things started.

What can't you live with?  Don't hold back!

Windows 10 Activity History

$

I found an interesting info I want to share with you:

Windows 10 collects and saves your activity history both on your computer and to the cloud, from browsing history to location information to everything in between. Luckily Microsoft makes it easy to see all the data that is being stored, and also makes it easy to delete it.

What Data Does Windows 10 Track?

The data that Windows collects includes:

Edge browsing history
Bing search history
Location data (if it's enabled)
Cortana voice commands
If you use Microsoft's HealthVault or the Microsoft Band device, any activity collected through that service is also stored. Microsoft says it collects this data in order to provide you with more relevant results and content that is of interest to you.

How to Delete Windows 10 Activity History

You can easily see what data has been stored and how to delete it. There are two ways you can clear your activity history: either directly within your computer's settings or in your Microsoft cloud account. To do it on your computer, do the following:

Go to Settings > Privacy > Activity History.
Under Clear Activity History, click the Clear button.
If you want to prevent Windows from continuing to collect this data, under Collect Activities toggle off the option: Let Windows collect my activities.

How to View Windows 10 Activity History

Go to Settings > Privacy > Activity History and click Manage my activity info.

A browser window will open up, and you may be prompted to log into your account if you aren't already logged in. You can also reach this page by going to account.microsoft.com/privacy/activity-history.

Here, you should see your data divided into the categories listed above: Browsing History, Search History, Location Activity, Voice Activity, Cortana's Notebook, and Health Activity. You can view and clear data in each section, by clicking the clear data button that corresponds with each section, and click the button confirming that you want to delete it.

You can also click on the Activity History tab to will view a full list of all data types: voice, search, browsing history, and location information. Microsoft also makes it easy to filter down to each category by clicking on it.

Google finds security flaw in Windows 10’s third-party pre-installed Password Manager

Quote

It appears that Microsoft is bundling a Password Manager with fresh installation files of Windows 10 operating system, and over the top of that, the pre-installed Password Manager comes with a Critical Security bug. As we noted above, the critical security vulnerability comes with Windows 10 downloads.

Now on top of all security holes in Win10 they are also on forced install Apps.

Touchscreen mousepointer (enabled all the time)?

$

Hey... would like to know when using a touchscreen (in Win10 or earlier versions) that the mouse pointer stays on all the time and visible. When I touch the screen with my finger/stylus, I would prefer the mouse pointer onscreen stays and shows right underneath my finger (no matter how fat your fingers are).  And when I drag my finger on the screen, the mouse pointer should move along with it.  The mousepointer is only visible when I move an attached mouse or when I use the touchpad.

I looked in the Mouse/touchpad/touchscreen & Ease of access menus, but could not find anything about it. Am I looking in the wrong place or does it not exist?  There is a 3rd party program I found called Touchmousepointer & this seems to be in the right direction of what I am looking for but I have not tried it yet.  If any of you use those video rental kiosks, especially Redbox (in the USA), then you know what I am talking about when/where the mouse pointer on their touchscreen appears at the point where you touch the screen.  Thanks.

Installing W10 from 16 GB USB.

I have an ASRock X399 board that I created a RAID0 and need to install the drivers.  There is an order requirement for the drivers, so I have been unsuccessful in injecting the drivers.  I have tried using Rufus to create a USB stick and as long as I use an 8 GB stick, all is fine - the drivers install fine (using "Load Driver" on "...where do want to install...") and I can see my RAID.  If I use a 16 GB stick (required for my large Unattended install) and the drivers appear to install OK, but I still see the individual drives and not the RAID.  I have posted on the TechNet forum with one reply that did not help.  Can anyone suggest a solution of source of a solution?  I do have an open ticket with AMD but no useful reply so far - maybe after the holidays.  Thanks much for you time.  Enjoy, John.

Just a quick question re converting MBR drive to GPT. I have all my media cloned onto a new 3GB hdd. Realising I should have initialised it as GPT, if I now use Acronis to do a convert to GPT from MBR am I going to lose all my sharing permissions and have to configure it all from scratch. Anyone done this before? Jonah

Making a disk image in Windows 10

I need to make a full image of a 64 megabyte IDE Disk On Module and have it work with DOSbox or some other DOS or PC emulator that can run DOS. I also need to be able to write the image back to the DOM so it can boot the thin client it's normally installed in.

All I need to do to the DOM or an image of it is run FORMAT /S with the DOS that will be run from it. Then I can copy everything else to the DOM from within Windows, plug it back into the thin client and finish setting up everything from there.

I tried an uncompressed, full sector image with Macrium Reflect. DOSbox won't use that, can't get CHS info from the image.

If WYSE hadn't been so 'clever' with their BIOS I could simply make a bootable USB from Windows and boot the thin client from it and install DOS. But noooo, they had to put in a roadblock. It can be worked around, this guy did it with a linux kernel patch. Should be possible to write a little DOS program to do the same hack, but I'm not a programmer.

Delete Windows 10 encryption key locally

There must be a way to delete an encryption key that was created on a computer.  I know I can decrypt files while the key still exists, but please read carefully my unique situation.

I had to recover data for a customer who had encrypted files, I need to install the encryption key on my computer temporarily to recover the data off there and onto a USB drive so it can then transfer to their freshly installed Windows on their computer.  I don't want to keep their encryption key on my computer so I want to know how to remove the key from my Windows 10 pro.

Thanks in advance.

NoVirusThanks Win Update Stop - another program to prevent W10 auto-update

Yep, another program that helps to prevent Windows 10 from automatically update. this one comes from NoVirusThanks, a software developer that gave the world a few programs like Exe Radar Pro. that I've read a lot good about on security-related sites.  Some might find it handy.

http://www.novirusthanks.org/products/win-update-stop/

Personally I didn't test. It says it supports all 32/64 bit Windows from XP to 10, but I find Win7 built-in tools for that purpose quite better than the one in Win 10 ;)

Windows 10 Update Problem

Hi guys,

For about 2 weeks now I have been struggling (no success so far) with a very annoying problem related to Windows Update. Around Jan 10th, I got this thingy - see first screenshot.

I have been reading and implementing some solutions found on the Internets, but nothing seems to work. The most common suggestion was to run Windows Update Troubleshooter (wu170509.diagcab), which I did several times, but it did not remove the problem, despite that every time I ran the Troubleshooter I got a success confirmation - see second screenshot.

It seems Windows Update is not shot down completely, since I still get some updates, including everyday definition updates for Windows Defender - see third screenshot.

My OS system version is Windows 10 x64 Educational, Version 1709, Built 16299.19.

No hardware problems or conflicts; no apparent virus or malware infections (scanned with Symantec and NOD32 online scanners).

If anyone has a solution, please share it - help is greatly appreciated. I just neither have too much time to tinker with the M$ id*** child, nor a reinstall is an option at the moment.

Thanks in advance :-)
