DPI Scaling Applications Individually?

Hello, Windows 10 has been surprisingly smooth lately but there's one potential issue I can't seem to fix, DPI scaling of applications. Windows 10's DPI caused annoyingly blurry font on a high-resolution monitor. I found a slight fix, but there are a few applications which show 125% scaling is too much and must be reduced to 100% for a comfortable experience. The problem is I cannot find a way to individually scale the DPI of an individual application.

Going into the compatibility area of properties has proved itself worthless.

Classic 2000 - a collection of classic themes for Windows 8.1 and 10 (high contrast)

This is a collection of classic themes from Windows 2000 that I "ported" to Windows 8.1 and 10. I say "ported", because the themes rely on the new high contrast engine and as such obviously look much different than even the high contrast themes from Windows 7 (which used the Windows Classic theme as their basis). Nevertheless, I took all the colour values directly from the Windows 2000 registry, so they should at least give you a similar feel, if not look, as the original themes.

There are 18 classic themes included together with an inverted (usually dark) version of each of them. In addition, I have also added my own Windows Standard (Warm) and Windows Standard (Warm Inverted) themes that have a few values tweaked for better readability. Windows Standard (Warm) theme is actually the original theme that I ported and modified in order to simply be able to use Windows 10 comfortably (as I hate the overall Windows 10 dark look and find it very difficult to use for my eyes) that inspired me to port the others.

Is there a way to always show the lock-wallpaper instead of the accent color when shutting down/restarting?

It's a bit hard to describe by text what I want to do so I'll show two screenshots. Basically this is what it looks like when you shutdown or restart Windows 10 after logging in to a user, the background is made up by the accent color:

This however is how it looks like when you reboot or shutdown before you login to any user:

where the background shows the computer's lockscreen image. Is there any way to always show the lockscreen image instead of a the solid color?

WiFi sharing and frequent connection drops on the connected devices

I am writing this in the Windows 10 forum, although I have a feeling that this issue is related to all Windows versions that have Internet Connection Sharing.

I have been trying to set up a desktop PC as a WiFi router. The motherboard is Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI which has both wired Realtek RTL8168 and wireless Intel AC 7260 integrated. The cable modem is connected with a standard ethernet cable to the Realtek adapter, and the connection is then shared using the Intel AC 7260 adapter.

In order to share the connection I simply use the following command (with my own ssid and key values). 

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=ssidOfUrChoice key=keyOfUrChoice
netsh wlan start hostednetwork

In the beginning, everything seems to work fine. I am able to connect to the network with other devices and use the Internet from them. The problem is that the connection suddenly drops every now and then (at least once or twice every hour). The PC itself stays connected to the Internet, but the other devices suddenly disconnect, and then re-connect after a few seconds. The cycle then repeats itself indefinitely.

I have been trying to solve the problem but I am not really into networking and have no knowledge about how to troubleshoot such issues. I have tried to use both DHCP and assigning static IP addresses, but it made no difference (except for a faster reconnection to the network with the static IPs). In addition, the PC itself was used before to connect to the WiFi through an external router using its Intel wireless adapter, and there were no connection drops there. The connection drops happen even if the devices are located very close to the PC, where the WiFi signal is very strong. I have also disabled the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" options for both network adapters in the Device Manager.

Could anyone help me in troubleshooting this problem?

autounattend.xml that asks for ProductKey

I'm trying to prepare an Win10-Setup-Image (using sysprep + autounattend.XML  + Acronis) that could be installed on several PCs.

But using my autounattend.xml the Setup does not ask for the Win10 ProductKey.

I'v tried by adding in "Microsoft-Windows-Setup" (both X86 and amd64) 

   <UserData>
     <AcceptEula>true</AcceptEula>
     <ProductKey>
       <WillShowUI>Always</WillShowUI>
     </ProductKey>
   </UserData>

But that does not work.

Removing an existing Key with 

slmgr.vbs /upk

before sysprep does not help.

I have no <ProductKey> entry in"Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup".

The complete autounattend.XML file (with changed Passwords) is attached.

Any idea, what I could Change?

Outlook 2016 won't rebuild index

I have a new install of Office 2016 with Windows 10 and Outlook will not search.  It says 0 files remaining to index.

I tried rebuilding the index and it indexing the computer files but doesn't seem to index Outlook at all.  Outlook was not included in the list of items to index originally until I repair installed Office 2016, and then I tried rebuilding the index again but still it does not search in Outlook.  I tried a new PST file incase it was corrupted and that didn't make a difference.

It's a new computer and never seemed to work.  What am I missing here?

Windows 10 update question

Hi, suppose I have laptop running Nov 2015 update, I want to upgrade it to latest FCU build(January, February when it gets released), would I get FCU upgrade in Windows Update? Or do I have to download, install using MCT? Also don't have broadband, using mobile Wi-Fi with daily 1GB FUP, it'd take 4 days to download. would windows update automatically pause when there is no Internet & resume when connected or does the download gets reset?

EventLogChannelsView - which channels to disable?

So I have gone through group policy and shutdown everything I understand. completely disabled auto updates via group policy, and disabled all telemetry that can be disabled, consumer experiences, and everything else that can be shut down there. No apps, no cortana. Disabled unneeded services. Disabled all unneeded scheduled tasks. Now I am trying to minimize logging.

Going through perfmon I find that there are a few logs which I can disable safely without any ill effects. The one that got me was WdiContextLog, as it took some trial and error to figure out that this was the one that caused the start menu to become extremely unresponsive when disabled. There aren't that many logs in here anyway. After disabling a few I have 11 enabled here. Now I don't completely understand how all this works, but I gather that these logs are pulling data from multiple sources in some cases, so maybe that is why NirSoft's EventLogChannelsView shows 299 event log channels as enabled. I am actually doing this for a friend just now, but it will apply to my own system when I get home next week as well. My friend initially wanted to just turn off all the logs, and he tried to, and he broke his OS - lots of strange behavior, extremely slow, and unstable. I'm not sure what all he did, but he was smart enough to take a disk image before his attempt.

So I wonder if any of you smart people would not mind helping me to identify which of these 299 channels are essential, which are maybe not essential but might be important, and which are not really needed for someone like me (or my friend) who will never make use of any of them anyway. I really only want those ones running which have to be running for general application compatibility and system stability. EventLogChannelsView gives lots of options for sorting these. You can see which ones are 'classic' and which ones are new. I can see that many have zero entries, and a few have lots of entries. I temporarily disabled all of them, and shut down a number of services in order to open a window of opportunity to create a junction and move winevt directory off the system volume and onto a smaller cheap SSD which is used for vram, scratch disk, indexing, and logging. There was one (Intel-SST-CFD-HDA%4IntelSST.etl) that was very stubborn, but somehow I did manage to gain control of it long enough to create the junction. Then I re-enabled everything just as it was before that operation. Hope some of you might be willing to offer some deeper insight here. For list of enabled event channels see the spoiler at the bottom.

As an aside, I am also very curious about NtfsLog in Perfmon. In Windows 10 I seem to recall it writing directly to D:0\$LogFile which is an integral part of the ntfs drive format. This file is presented as if it is essential for the volume to be able to recover failed writes due to unexpected shutdowns or some such. It seems like this is actually of limited use to average users. In general if our system shuts down suddenly, in the middle of writing data, we lose the data. Ntfs or no. Other file systems seem to work perfectly fine without this 'feature,' discounting potential data loss if shutdown mid-write. It seems to me like the major benefits of Ntfs are mostly not facilitated by this logfile. Such as bigger file sizes, and advanced permissions. I digress though. Shouldn't $LogFile be handled by the Ntfs driver or something on a very low level, rather than an event log? Maybe my recollection is mistaken. I will have to recheck Windows 10, but I could swear that the event log "NtfsLog" in perfmon startup was writing to D:0\$LogFile in win 10. Yet right now, I am looking at the very same entry on Server 2016 but it is writing to C:\Windows\system32\LogFiles\Wmi\NtfsLog, which kind of makes more sense. So what is up with NtfsLog?

kb4074596 failed to install

Update came and after the 1gig download it said 100%, then stated backing out of update, failed to install. After twice doing this, I download the msu file and did a stand alone install (windows10.0-kb4074596-x64_c7315b0bdcc1cd173f8ff685e4ff365700739c62.msu) with the same results. No error number nothing. Just failed and baking out.

Install old skype in Windows 10?

Until now I used to use this installer, which downloaded the latest installer:

However it stopped working and now Im stuck with this mediocre skype for windows 10. The official download page redirects me to the store and I dont have a W7 computer to download the installer and I fear that its possible that the installer downloader redirects me to the store.

In short, do you know if its possible to install the old skype in windows 10? The one that isnt from the store.

Easy way to get access to all task scheduler items?

I'm trying to follow instructions to disable windows defender and have installed group policy editor (this is windows-10 home) and have done it there and also added a key in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender DisableAntiSpyware=1) and now I'm trying to change windows defender scheduled scan - Conditions - start the task if the computer is idle for (some large number) minutes but I'm not able to check that box.  Is there any simple way I can unblock that and all similar prohibitions where-ever they may be in task scheduler?

[Guide] Disable Data Collection in Windows 10

First Time Setup

Spoiler
  • Do not use Express Settings. Hit Customize, and make sure everything is turned off.
  • It's strongly recommended that you use a local account with Windows 10.


Settings App

  • Head to Start > Settings > Privacy, and disable everything, unless there are some things you really need.
  • While within the Privacy page, go to Feedback, select Never in the first box, and Basic in the second box.
  • Head to Settings > Update and Security > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered, and turn the first switch off.
  • Disable Cortana by clicking the Search bar/icon.
  • (Optional) Disable web search in Search by going to Settings, and turning off Search online and include web results.
  • Change the name of your PC by going to Start (or hitting the Windows key), typing About PC, and clicking Rename PC.

Group Policy Editor

How to get the Group Policy Editor on Home version: https://www.itechtics.com/enable-gpedit-windows-10-home/

Open up the Group Policy Editor by launching gpedit.msc as an administrator and make the following changes:

  • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Double click Telemetry, hit Enabled, set the value to 0 and click apply. It's counter-intuitive, I know, but that is actual way to do it. Proof

NOTE: This only works in the Enterprise edition, but the final step provides a decent enough workaround for Pro users.

  • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive, double click Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage, hit Enabled, then apply.
  • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender, double click Turn Off Windows Defender, hit Enabled, then apply.

 
Registry Editor

Value Changes

TinyWall

A free, lightweight, easy-to-use front end for the Windows Firewall. It requires no configuration as it blocks all outgoing connections unless explicitly whitelist it by default. However, you may want to set it to always run as admin to prevent a privilege arms race.

I am trying to install Windows 10 into a VM, but keep getting this error.
What the hell is going on? I had a lot of problems with this stuff on Windows 7, which kind of made sense to me, given the age of the OS, but why is it happening with Windows 10?

Why shouldn't it install to a GPT disk? That's what I want!

Hi,
I never wanted to upgrade my Win7 to Windows 10. But this time I have no choice.

I just bought a second hand Lenovo T440p laptop: iCore7, Ram 12 GB, SSD+HDD 500 GB. Windows 10 Pro x64, version 1709 (Fall Creators Update)
I changed the PC name and the Admin user account name.

1. How to rename/change the user folder name c:\users\xxxx ? There is no option under properties for renaming this folder and the folder, subfolders and all files are set to read only.

2. How to Change/Relocate the Default Location of User Folders (Documents, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, and similar) to a different drive from C: to D: ?

3. How to give the Windows 10 desktop the appearance of windows 7: "Start, Run, Control Panel, AdminTools, Printers, User, My Computer ..."?

4. How to Configuring Automatic Updates to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"?

5. Is it possible to add Quick Launch or similar?

6. Is there a tweaker tool able to do these tweaks ?

Is there a simple way to remove the failed installation warning when starting windows update?

The customer doesn't want to reinstall....

The computer is updated but every time you start the windows update manually the failed to install windows 10 message is still there....

If system refuses to sleep/hibernate/hybrid shutdown...

...and you've gone through the usual tricks of checking if some application or driver is blocking these actions, it's possible that Windows allocated itself a hibernation file that's not large enough. This could be the reason if classic non-hybrid sleep and shutdown work properly.

Try this command from administrative Command Prompt:

powercfg /H /SIZE 100

This sets the hiberfile.sys size to maximum size, which is is the amount of installed RAM. The default size didn't work on my PC with 4GB of RAM for some reason since the FCU, though the issue never occurred with more memory starved machines at my house. You can also play with TYPE setting, the documentation's on MSDN.

If the issue goes away after restart, then that was it. I hope it helps someone.
