Bugs in using AeroGlass v1.5.4 for Windows 10 Creators Update 1703

$

Hi,

Does anybody know how to fix this small bugs and small errors affected by using AeroGlass v1.5.4 for Win 10 Creators Update? Like on Windows 10 apps which has big text on the title bar (upper left of app window) and the button (min, max, close) are pretty big. I attached the screenshot sample below of these errors and bugs. Please have a look. Let me know if you have any tips how to fix this like on normal apps. Thanks.

Regards,

Hack

Unable to launch "Settings" app

I am unable to launch the settings modern application from the start menu. I am able to launch it from the notification pane but nowhere else. Typing into the start menu also will not allow it to be launched including trying to open any sub-options that display in the results.

This all started after a Windows Update I suppose, not 100% sure. I was missing the icon from the taskbar where it was pinned but I was also unable to find most of the modern apps in the Start Menu including Edge. I was able to restore those but then lost the ability to launch settings.

Is there a way to get this back? I am downloading the Win10 Creators ISO now to attempt a repair.

Hello, I own a dell laptop, that uses windows 8. somehow, the password was changed on the admin account. Thankfully, the guest account is on so I can still use the laptop. I tried going to the given site to reset the password but that did not work.

Windows 10 Regressions

I think maybe xpclient started a topic like this once, but I don't see it, so...

Please list the things Windows 10 doesn't do FOR YOU as well as it used to, and which make Windows 10 simply unacceptable for you to use.

It would be cool if you'd list any workarounds you've found/implemented as well...

Here's a brief start, with the most obvious things from my list:

  • The ATI folks have dumbed down their display drivers they're preparing for Windows 10 so that functionality I found essential (per-channel color calibration and preset management) is just missing.  Since I develop color-managed software I have a need for a very configuration, and I cannot achieve it with Win 10.  There is a rumor that the drivers for a MUCH more expensive workstation graphics card still offer these features, but those drivers traditionally lag behind those for the mainstream cards, and probably will eliminate the features sooner or later.

  • Microsoft keeps releasing updates or upgrades that revert key things and cause new problems.  Huge numbers of settings/tweaks, including some privacy settings, got reverted during the 10586 and 14393 upgrades, yet even small things get reverted during updates.  For example, I absolutely DON'T want "Desktop" showing up under "This PC" in Explorer, yet back it comes after a Windows Update.

  • The desktop "flat, borderless, lifeless" look and feel, well, there's no other way to put it:  Sucks.  Even beyond the aesthetics, who thinks borderless windows actually work right?  Have you seen the edge of a window just showing behind the edge of a borderless window, and want to click it but can't?  Aero Glass for Win 8+ helps a lot with the aesthetics, but it doesn't re-theme the controls.  A 3rd party theme would probably help, but I haven't taken the time to figure out what works yet.  The worst of it is that these things get re-broken by Microsoft on a regular basis, so finding an acceptable tweak isn't permanent.  And I'm sorry, but their default look and feel isn't usable.

I have many more things on my list, but these will serve to get things started.

What can't you live with?  Don't hold back!

Is ReFS ready for prime-time?

$

Microsoft make lots of claims about how wonderful and robust ReFS is, yet if I google "ReFS corrupt" there's no shortage of results with persons seeking help.

I may be cynical, but I'm reminded of the claims M$ made about NTFS not needing defragmenting with NT3.x, and Diskeeper corp. nee. Executive Software was born.. it took till NT4 for Microsoft to provide an API, and NT5 to supply a tool...

There seems to be a parallel, in fact the tools to fix corrupt ReFS are the very same as fragmented NTFS under NT3.x, copy your data elsewhere, format, and copy it back...

Personally I think I'll hold off deploying ReFS until there's at least a tool to check it.. preferably a native one.

Lost Microsoft Edge

I was having problems with Microsoft Edge, in Windows 10, so I went into SETTINGS, APPS, EDGE, advanced and tried REPAIR. That did not work, so I tried RESET. Then I rebooted the computer. Now I can not find EDGE anywhere. It is gone. Internet Explorer and google Chrome still work, but I can't find EDGE anywhere. Kindly do not tell me to just use Chrome. I have been using Internet Explorer and Edge for many years, and plan to stay with Edge if I can. Any suggestions, thanks.

KB4025376 is compatible with Home edition, but an error message appeared when I tried to install KB4025338.

It seems that KB4032695 is the last cumulative security update compatible with Home edition 1507.

remove blue arrows indicating NTFS-compression

Hi,

i have nice Icons on my Desktop. The blue facing arrows showing NTFS-compression make them fugly.

And nooooo, i don't want to disable NTFS-compression to get rid of those Icon-overlays. :realmad:

There was a hack with "implementing" a registry-entry, but since the newest build this is said not to work.

Any ideas?

Powershell

How the hell can I get rid of, or turn OFF powershell in  Windows 10??  Google searches just return nonsense about how to uninstall OTHER apps I want to just GET THE f*** RID OF "POWERSHELL" COMPLETELY so I can open a damned COMMAND PROMPT on right click.. W10 DISABLED my registry setting to do that  the "FATHERLESS INDIVIDUALS!" I'm getting seriously SO FRUSTRATED that if it requires booting Linux and DELETING the damned powershell.exe I will.. and if THAT results in Windows failing to boot.. then Linux here I come PERMANENTLY.

Why Windows builds are so different

$

0

Using svf patch
or esd

for example

i make image install.esd file from build 16288.2
and export install.wim to this file, only 400mb is non-different, is the same data, but the rest 800mb is different

what the reason for this ?
is ms using each time another encrypting compiler, or the optimization compiler
make the dll and exe different each time

thx, also for any suggestions

btw i did a test with 32bit and 64bit same build and there big different

edit:

(OP)

I got install.esd modified and lited from build 16288.2
its around 1.2gb
when i export a similar lited version of build 16299.15 to 16288.2 bulid install.esd image
its going from 1.2gb to 2+gb
btw when convert the install.wim of 16299 build to esd alone its 1.2gb but that given cos reason i mention
that's why 400mb is same code for both builds and 800mb are always different

i duno how code works
but is it logical to assume those builds are mostly the same? code wise
so its should be around 100-150mb different

Dual boot Win 10 with Win 10?

$

So I've seen many articles and post here about dual booting but I haven't been able to find anything related to dual booting win 10 with win 10. I should buy a separate laptop as I DJ on the side but instead I'm trying to run my DJ software on a clean version so I don't run into any glitches but still need my editing software for videos, graphics and music. Anyone know if they play nice with one another?

Font rendering is a mess in Windows 10

$

0

I have no words to describe the mess Microsoft created in the font rendering in Windows 10.

Just look at this explorer window. Some elements like title bar and address bar have a grayscale antialiasing, the rest has cleartype enabled.

post-385423-0-66436500-1438379509_thumb.

Ok, let's open ClearType Tuner and select a third option on a third page which is a grayscale cleartype.

post-385423-0-19304800-1438379567_thumb.

And guess what, it's still the same! This tool has no effect at all on the cleartype's color settings.

Disabling cleartype is no option, as the text becomes a total mess.

So the question is:

How can I force Windows to use that grayscale cleartype smoothing method on all of the GUI elements?

If this is some kind of a new font used on the titlebars, can I use it on the other elements by editing aero.msstyle or shellstyle.dll?

p.s. The reason of my post is that I use one display with RGB matrix and the other with BGR, So I have to constantly switch the cleartype's sub pixel matrix to get rid of blurred fonts.

Fix Errors (from a fresh or older Win10) by Service Config ;)

$

Disclaimer: Use at own risk !
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is it for:
Fixing Errors, & most of the Eventlog Errors (from a fresh or older Win10) by Service Config
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why:
- Errors in the Eventviewer after a fresh install
- Some services was changed, you maybe didn't realize, but what you get, is that the Store, Windows Update & more couldn't run, properly anymore.
- My Experience is, most problems that appear on "friends" computers in Windows 10, belongs to the Service config !
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some weird Examples I've found:
- get Eventlog Errors by change LanmanWorkstation from Auto to Demand (On Demand, it will be started anyway)
- get Eventlog Errors by change WSearch (Indexing) from Auto to demand, but NOT if you set it to disabled... ???
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fixes Errors & Eventlog errors like:
- DNS Client (v10 Vortex+wpad) EventID 1014
- Service Control Manager (CldFlt+Spooler+iphlpsvc+Printer+Update Orchester) Event ID 7000
- DistributedCom (SID: Nicht verfügbar) ID1016
- SecurityCenter (SECURITY_PRODUCT_STATE_ON) EventID 16
- Perflib (Bits) EventID 1008
- Application Error (MRT.exe) EventID 1000
- DHCP CLient (DHCP Waiting) EventID 50160
- AppModel-Runtime (0x800700B7) EventID 37
- User Device Registration EventID 360
- Pipe Closed Errors
- Windows Store Problems (0x80072ee7)
- Cluster Errors & more
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Limits:
- English\German Windows only, cause MS translated the ALC Permission Names (the user BUILTIN\Administrators is called VORDEFINIERT\Administratoren on a German Windows oO)
- Intention is to fix Errors, maybe you have reasons, to keep a service disabled, even if it provide errors
- Can't and won't change following 4 Services: DcomLaunch, RpcSs, WinDefend, gpsvc - don't try !!!
- Permissionchanges are permanent, sorry. - I would like to set them to their Original State after, but feels like to much work.
BUILTIN\Administrators Allow FullControl (A;OICI;KA;;;BA) will be added on some Registry Service Entry's.
- Doesn't change, or restore, driver states that can controlled with SC command, cause: one single error here, and Windows is smashed...
- Doesn't fix KernelPnP (WudfRd) EventID 219 - This one can be fixed with "snappy driver installer" or similar which is using the driverpacks
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Changes: 23.07.2017
- Add a Powershell policy bypass
- Add OS Language Check exitloop (Script is for English and German only, and will exits on other Systems !)
- Kept NcaSvc, WEPHOSTSVC and WiaRpc at Original State (cause one or all three, could be needed...)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Files:

Download -> R4D3_Fixes.zip <- Download or here link https://www.file-upload.com/jd6our1a5hrg

R4D3_Fix_All_Services_to_Default.bat - Change All Services to their Original State
1. OS Language will be checked
2. Services with Variable Names will be searched, and declared as variables (could take a while)
3. A Powershellscript runs with that Variables to get Full Adminrights on Permissionprotected Services
   From: www.alkanesolutions.co.uk/2016/06/29/set-registry-key-permissions-powershell
3. Some Services will be Changed via REG ADD (cause they can't be changed via SC)
4. NTFS-Registry Permission Protected Services will be changed to their Original State
5. Other Services will be changed to their Original State
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

R4D3_Fix_Service_Config.bat - Changes the following Servicestates

Demand:
CDPUserSvc_xxx = CDPUserSvc_xxx
CDPSvc = Connected Devices Platform Service
DoSvc = Delivery Optimization Service
FontCache = FontCache
MapsBroker = Downloaded Maps Manager
NlaSvc = Network Location Awareness
OneSyncSvc_xxx = OneSyncSvc

Disabled:
AxInstSV = ActiveX-Installer (needed sometimes in domain networks)
CldFlt = Cloud Files Mini Filter Driver (no reason for that one)
DiagTrack = Diagnostics Tracking Service (no thanks)
DusmSvc = Data Usage (no thanks)
iphlpsvc = IP Helper Service (keep, if you use IPv6)
lfsvc = Geolocation Service (no thanks)
MSiSCSI = Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service (something for servers)
RetailDemo = RetailDemo (no thanks)
SCPolicySvc = Smart Card Removal Policy Service (never seen someone using a smartcard reader)
SessionEnv = Remote Desktop Configuration (for remote desktops)
SysMain = Superfetch (stop unnecessary writings on my ssd)
TrkWks = Distributed Link Tracking Client (nobody need that)
UmRdpService = Remote Desktop Services (for Terminal RDP Connections)
W32Time = Windows Time service (to get rid off it ADMIN CMD: w32tm.exe /unregister)
WbioSrvc = Windows Biometric Service (no thanks)
WinHttpAutoProxySvc = WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service (for Domain? Networks with Proxy Server)
WMPNetworkSvc = Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (for PlugAndPlay Network Media Devices ???)
workfolderssvc = Microsoft Work Folders (needed sometimes in domain Networks)
WSearch = Indexservice (stop unnecessary writings on my ssd/laptophdd)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

R4D3_Fix_Homegroup_Assistent.bat
(Fixes Error 0x80630203, where a homegroup could not be changed or joined) - It just deletes the protected crypto files in \Users\All Users\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

R4D3_Fix_Geolocation_Service.bat
(Fixes the Error, that Geolocation Service could not be Started, via Removing a "false Trigger Info Reg Key")
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

R4D3_CleanUp_All_Event_Logs
(cmd wmic Shortcut)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

R4D3_Restart_Special
(cmd shutdown Shortcut)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

R4D3_Show_Activ_Connections
(cmd netstat Shortcut)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

R4D3_Reg_Tweaks.reg
(some regtweaks, mostly for ssd, read the comments in the reg, before using)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Usage:

1) Important: You need to right click each file first, and click allow (there is a flag on the files: file is from another computer...)

2) (Optional) Cause I disable the indexservice, I would suggest to remove the indexes before (right click properties c: -> disable indexoption, then: in control panel under index, remove the folders, and rewrite the index... - both steps could be take a really long long time...)

3) .bat Files and Shortcuts needs to be run with ADMINRIGHTS to work properly (Mouse right click on the file and then ...)

4) (Optional) Cleanup your Eventlogs first - from a Console with Adminrights type: (or use the Shortcut)
for /F "tokens=*" %1 in ('wevtutil.exe el') DO wevtutil.exe cl "%1"

5) Run "R4D3_Fix_All_Services_to_Default.bat" as Admin (Highly Recommend)

6) Run "R4D3_Fix_Service_Config.bat" as Admin (or edit it first to fit your needs)

7) Restart Your Computer (Optional: "Special Refresh [Cache???] Restart" via Adminconsole "C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c "shutdown -g -t 0" (or use the Shortcut)

8) (Optional) Check your Logs in Eventviewer !

9) (Optional) Test and Tell me, what Problem my Script fixed for you...

Notes, you can:

- Check all Service acl flags with powershell:
  Get-ACL "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\*" |Format-List

- Check Service Driver Dependencies:
  for /f "tokens=2" %s in ('sc query type^= driver ^| find "SERVICE_NAME"') do sc EnumDepend %s

- Check Service States Config:
  for /f "tokens=2" %s in ('sc query state^= all ^| findstr "SERVICE_NAME"') do @(for /f "tokens=3" %t in ('sc qc %s ^| findstr "START_TYPE"') do @echo xxx %s = %t)

Kept from Old Post:
- would be awesome if someone could change the Snippet that the output is:
  xxx SERVICE_NAME = START_TYPE = DISPLAY_NAME

Restoring the "Connect" App

$

I had an error message constantly in my event logs that Windows was trying to uninstall the Miracast app and failing, so I decided to try removing it myself.

Unfortunately I misunderstood things and I used "install_wim_tweak" to remove the "Connect" app by mistake!

This app is called "Microsoft-PPIProjection-Package".

I then realised that what I should have deleted was "Windows.MiracastView"!

I deleted that and the errors went away, but I now want to reinstall the "Connect" app, but I'm finding this very difficult.

I found its folder in C:\Windows\SystemApps was empty (presumably deleted by install_wim_tweak) so I re-added the files from my install.wim.

I then tried reinstalling by running

Add-AppxPackage -register "C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.PPIProjection_cw5n1h2txyewy\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode

in Powershell, thinking this would restore it.

It didn't work, I just got a message saying -

"Rejecting a request to register from appxmanifest.xml because the manifest is not in the package root".

As far as I can see the relevant appxmanifest.xml is exactly where it should be, matching all the other folders in the SystemApps folder.

Anyone any idea what I'm doing wrong? There don't seem to be an file permissions or ownership issues.

Thanks, Dave.

:)

Let the Re-Tweakage Begin

$

Today I upgraded my Win 10 test VM, which was running a trimmed-down, all-business version 1607 build 14393.969 setup quite flawlessly, to the new Creator's update, version 1703 build 15063.

I had to go find updated VMware Tools, newer than the version 11 VMware Workstation I'm using, in order not to have it black screen.

And I disabled Aero Glass for Win 8+ completely, by both unregistering DWMGlass.dll and disabling the Task Sheduler entry for AeroHost.  I also returned the desktop to the stock Windows 10 theme (I'm sure going to miss rounded controls with wonderful skeuomorphism for a while).

Process count to support an idle desktop in version 1607 before the upgrade:  41

Process count after the upgrade:  105 (!!)

Microsoft split most services out so that they run one per svchost.exe process instance.

And they ALSO installed a buttload of additional bloatware - hence the title of this thread.  In pursuit of an App-free, cloud-disconnected, private, desktop OS, I have begun the process of trimming it down.  So far that's going surprisingly well.

To my surprise, many of the things I had installed before remained functional - for example Classic Shell is still on task, and the Sphinx firewall is running fine.  And they didn't even revert my UAC-disabling setting of the EnableLUA registry entry.  Nice of them.

But they DID reinstall a more Apps hosts and brokers and services than you can shake a stick at.

So far I've gone through these things:

Window title bars were too big, needed to run SetWindowsMetrics.reg.
Needed to turn on System Protection (Restore Points).
O&O ShutUp10 restored 7 settings that were made less private.
Updated to latest release of WinAero Tweaker.
  Menu Show Delay Reduced
  Enable Balloon tooltips
Disable Quick Action buttons in Actions Center
Removed some Default Entries in File Explorer's context menu
  Customize Quick Access Item
Disable the "- Shortcut" text for shortcuts
  Disable Windows Ink Workspace
  Uncheck Disable Password Reveal Button
Turn off messages about firewall in Security and Maintenance
Turn off messages about virus protection in Security and Maintenance
Finish installing HP printer device software in Security and Maintenance
(noted BITS attempted to contact fs.microsoft.com)
(noted wermgr attempted to contact msftconnecttest.com)
Windows10ReTweaker:
  Increase Privacy
  Remove OneDrive
Set default optimization to General Items
  Unhide AppData and ProgramData folders
Disable generation of hidden Thumbs.db files
Disable Windows Search (SearchIndexer) service in Services.msc
Disable SuperFetch in Services.msc
Disable Sync Host_2efa9. Can only stop it in Services.msc. Needs to be disabled in registry:
Run through the Settings App:
  System:
Disable "Show me the Windows welcome experience".
When I sign in "Use desktop mode".
When this device automatically switches tablet mode on or off "Don't ask me and don't switch".
On the taskbar, show windows that are open on "All desktops"
Pressing Alt+Tab shows windows that are open on "All desktops"
  Devices
Uncheck Let Windows manage my default printer
Windows10ReTweaker:
  Remove all Apps
Manually disabled the Network Connection Broker

At this point an idle desktop has just 84 processes running, with no Cortana or other Apps and no cloud stuff, and uses 1.06 GB of RAM.

I'm going to be continuing this quest, but I've already gotten far enough to be able to say that Win 10 version 1703 still can be trimmed down to be a desktop-only system.

Microsoft hangs it on, I trim it off.  It remains to be seen whether a system so-tweaked is any better than its predecessors.

Latest Updates Mis-Labelled?

$
0
0

I've just had the latest Patch Tuesday updates, and am a bit puzzled by the labelling of a couple of them in the "View installed update history" window.

The main update is labelled "2017-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for amd-64 based Systems (KB4048955)"

The Malicious Software Removal Tool is labelled "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows Insider Preview and Server Technical preview x64 - November 2017 (KB890830)"

I'm not on any "preview" version of Windows 10 as far as I know, and surely the first one should say "x64" not "amd-64" on an Intel-based system, which mine is?

The Flash Player update seems to be labelled as I would expect.
Is everyone seeing this, and is it actually wrong?

First Time Setup

Spoiler
  • Do not use Express Settings. Hit Customize, and make sure everything is turned off.
  • It's strongly recommended that you use a local account with Windows 10.

Settings App

Spoiler
  • Head to Start > Settings > Privacy, and disable everything, unless there are some things you really need.
  • While within the Privacy page, go to Feedback, select Never in the first box, and Basic in the second box.
  • Head to Settings > Update and Security > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered, and turn the first switch off.
  • Disable Cortana by clicking the Search bar/icon.
  • (Optional) Disable web search in Search by going to Settings, and turning off Search online and include web results.
  • Change the name of your PC by going to Start (or hitting the Windows key), typing About PC, and clicking Rename PC.

echo y|cacls  C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etl  /d SYSTEM

Here's a list of tasks to delete courtesy of Technie007. You need to go into Task Scheduler to delete them.

Microsoft -> Windows -> Application Experience -> Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser
Microsoft -> Windows -> Application Experience -> ProgramDataUpdater
Microsoft -> Windows -> Autochk -> Proxy
Microsoft -> Windows -> Customer Experience Improvement Program -> Consolidator

Or use this command script to do everything automatically. You will have to accept a UAC prompt if you have it turned on because it auto elevates itself.

Group Policy Editor

Spoiler

How to get the Group Policy Editor on Home version: https://www.itechtics.com/enable-gpedit-windows-10-home/

Open up the Group Policy Editor by launching gpedit.msc as an administrator and make the following changes:

  • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Double click Telemetry, hit Enabled, set the value to 0 and click apply. It's counter-intuitive, I know, but that is actual way to do it. Proof

NOTE: This only works in the Enterprise edition, but the final step provides a decent enough workaround for Pro users.

  • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive, double click Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage, hit Enabled, then apply.
  • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender, double click Turn Off Windows Defender, hit Enabled, then apply.

Registry Editor

Spoiler

NOTE: Taking ownership of the keys may be required. This tool will allow you to do that.

Value Changes
Open up the Registry Editor by launching regedit as an administrator. Go through and make the following changes:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection, select AllowTelemetry, change its value to 0, then apply.

If any of the referenced keys don't exist then create them with the above values.

Deletions
Open up the Registry Editor by launching regedit as an administrator. Go through and delete the following keys and/or values:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\AutoLogger\SQMLogger

Hosts File

Spoiler

First, download the Take Ownership tweak and enable it. Then, head to the Hosts File by going through C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc, take ownership of the hosts file, and add the following IPs into it:

NOTE: If you add these domains manually and then use DWS_Lite you will end up with duplicate domains. Use HostMan to remove the duplicates.

Destroy Windows 10 Spying

FOSS created by @Nummer hosted on Github. It's quite effective at cutting out unnecessary data collection and metro crapware.

Windows Update MiniTool

An alternative way to update Windows created by stupid user from Ru-Board. It can configure your automatic update settings, has an offline mode, and other features. You will never have to use the Settings version of Windows Updates if you use this.

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/64939-Windows-Update-MiniTool (English Re-host. Requires registration.)

http://forum.ru-board.com/topic.cgi?forum=5&topic=48142#2 (stupid uer's original thread.)

TinyWall

A free, lightweight, easy-to-use front end for the Windows Firewall. It requires no configuration as it blocks all outgoing connections unless explicitly whitelist it by default. However, you may want to set it to always run as admin to prevent a privilege arms race.

Windows Firewall Configuration - Truly Block EVERYTHING...

If you still want to use a deny-by-default approach with Windows Firewall, but don't want to use TinyWall you can follow a guide posted by CODYQX4 on the My Digital Life Forums. It uses Windows Firewall Control, another front end for Windows Firewall.

HostsMan

A simple, free hosts file manager with a built-in editor and updater (no need for notepad). It can subscribe to several hosts file lists simultaneously that are automatically updated when a new version is released. It can also scan the hosts file for errors, duplicates and possible hijacks.

OneDrive Uninstaller

Run this script to completely uninstall OneDrive from your machine. Link.

Also please remember this is not an exhaustive list so feel free to post things that can improve this post an I'll add it to this post and credit you.

Lastly, to paraphrase NoelC: try things for yourself. Keep good notes on what you do, on what works, and save original files. The knowledge gained from the experience of seeing how things work is invaluable.

7/29/15: Changed IPs to 0.0.0.0 as recommended by NoelC.
7/31/15: Expanded telemetry list and added overkill, nuke-from-orbit list.
7/31/15: Reformatted the OP, reflected as many IPs as possible into hostnames, added Techie007's post to the relevant sections, and added gpedit.msc fix for Home users.
8/3/15:  Added tomasz86's OneDrive uinstaller and automated services & scheduled tasks command script.
8/5/15:  Added useful software/scripts section.
1/9/16:  Renamed useful software/scripts to useful software/scripts/forum threads and added stuff to it.
6/26/16: Reformatted to be readable with the new forum software.
