Hello, I own a dell laptop, that uses windows 8. somehow, the password was changed on the admin account. Thankfully, the guest account is on so I can still use the laptop. I tried going to the given site to reset the password but that did not work.

Windows 10 Regressions

I think maybe xpclient started a topic like this once, but I don't see it, so...

Please list the things Windows 10 doesn't do FOR YOU as well as it used to, and which make Windows 10 simply unacceptable for you to use.

It would be cool if you'd list any workarounds you've found/implemented as well...

Here's a brief start, with the most obvious things from my list:

  • The ATI folks have dumbed down their display drivers they're preparing for Windows 10 so that functionality I found essential (per-channel color calibration and preset management) is just missing.  Since I develop color-managed software I have a need for a very configuration, and I cannot achieve it with Win 10.  There is a rumor that the drivers for a MUCH more expensive workstation graphics card still offer these features, but those drivers traditionally lag behind those for the mainstream cards, and probably will eliminate the features sooner or later.

  • Microsoft keeps releasing updates or upgrades that revert key things and cause new problems.  Huge numbers of settings/tweaks, including some privacy settings, got reverted during the 10586 and 14393 upgrades, yet even small things get reverted during updates.  For example, I absolutely DON'T want "Desktop" showing up under "This PC" in Explorer, yet back it comes after a Windows Update.

  • The desktop "flat, borderless, lifeless" look and feel, well, there's no other way to put it:  Sucks.  Even beyond the aesthetics, who thinks borderless windows actually work right?  Have you seen the edge of a window just showing behind the edge of a borderless window, and want to click it but can't?  Aero Glass for Win 8+ helps a lot with the aesthetics, but it doesn't re-theme the controls.  A 3rd party theme would probably help, but I haven't taken the time to figure out what works yet.  The worst of it is that these things get re-broken by Microsoft on a regular basis, so finding an acceptable tweak isn't permanent.  And I'm sorry, but their default look and feel isn't usable.

I have many more things on my list, but these will serve to get things started.

What can't you live with?  Don't hold back!

Why does SystemSettings.exe automatically start 5 minutes after logon?

$
0
0

If I boot my Win 10 test VM, and leave it completely alone for 5 minutes, SystemSettings.exe and ApplicationFrameHost.exe are automatically started.  SystemSettings.exe goes immediately to Suspended state.

With BigMuscle's ModernFrame-x64-Debug.dll in place it's obvious when it happens because a debug console window opens for ApplicationFrameHost.exe.

Since mine is a system on which I don't normally expect to run an App of any kind, I sure as hell don't want a copy of SystemSettings.exe sitting in the background.

I will be sweeping through the Task Scheduler looking for what it is that's starting SystemSettings.exe after 5 minutes of idle time, but if you have any ideas - or if you also see this happen on your Win 10 system - please let me know.  What I don't know is whether most folks have enough Apps that this stuff always starts right up after login normally.

I've already removed a scheduled run of provtool at 5 minutes after bootup, but that didn't stop the run of SystemSettings.exe.

Interesting OSOT Windows Tweaker Tool by VMware Labs Promises to Lean Systems Down

$

VMware Labs has published a beta tool that identifies a whole lot of things that can be optimized in your running Windows system.  And it's not just for Windows 10.  Its focus is on optimizing VMs for production use but it works on hardware systems too.

https://labs.vmware.com/flings/vmware-os-optimization-tool

I ran it and found that I've already hit most of the things it tweaks, but if nothing else an interesting source of ideas (and a validation that I'm not the only one who would like to distill Windows down to only the "to work" items.  If you tell it to it will even remove all Apps, the Windows Store, Cortana, OneDrive, etc.

Just running it to analyze your system is trivial, but if you cannot restore your system easily, I recommend reading each and every line VERY CAREFULLY and understanding what it does before giving it the go ahead to Optimize.

Notably the tool advertises the ability to easily restore things it has optimized out, but I'd still be careful.

Remove Taskview button and more from Taskbar right click menu

Thought some might like to get rid of useless entries in the taskbar and found how to today. I also posted it on the tenforums and In TH2 it was possible to remove the Taskview button with a reg entry which stopped working in RS1 but it's possible to do by modifying a file and below is how I modded it and can also remove "Show Windows Ink Workspace" and "Show touch keyboard button" and others just remember to remove also leftover Seperators. Make sure to take a system image or create a restore point before proceeding and below is how mine looks now

Copy explorer.exe.mui from C:\Windows\en-US
Open with ResHacker and expand the Menu tree. In item # 205 remove
MENUITEM "Show Task &View button", 430, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "Show Windows Ink &Workspace button", 437, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "Show touch ke&yboard button", 436, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
Then recompile the file
Move to item # 206 and remove
MENUITEM "Show Windows Ink &Workspace button", 437, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "Show &touch keyboard button", 436, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
and recompile again then save the file somewhere safe
Go back to C:\Windows\en-US\explorer.exe.mui take ownership of explorer.exe.mui and rename it to explorer.exe.mui.old paste the modded file and restart the computer. So far no adverse effects at all
one can remove other unused entries such as Search if you happen to use some other software for that function but choose your own path

Intel G41,etc video chipsets no opengl support (Fix)

Hello!

There is a problem when updating to windows 10, your intel video graphics driver is updated to its latest windows update version, thats good, but... it doesnt have opengl support.

There is a solution.

1)Download the old windows 7 driver (G41 doesnt have driver for 8)

2)Remove the driver (with the software) from device manager (it will install standard vga controller)

3)Extract the .exe or .zip, go to "Graphics" folder

4)Open the .inf file

Find the line "CatalogFile=kit49659.cat" and put a ";" before it:

[Version]
Signature="$WINDOWS NT$"
Provider=%Intel%
ClassGUID={4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Class=Display
;CatalogFile=kit49659.cat

Go to

[IntelGfx.NTx86.6.2]; no install on Win8[IntelGfx.NTx86.6.0]

Swap it, put

[IntelGfx.NTx86.6.0]; no install on Win8[IntelGfx.NTx86.6.2]

Now save the .inf and close, right click and select install, it will prompt about the driver is not signed, install anyway, wait until a message appears.

Then go to device manager, select "standard vga", right click and update. Select the second option, then again the second option ("select from a list"), the .inf you installed shall appear, select it and click on next, it should install.

Now you have OpenGL support!

PD: I attached the .inf file, its for the Intel G41 express chipset

Bluetooth Devices Only Work In Linux, Even Though They're Windows Compatible.

I have 4 devices (3 bluetooth and 1 IR) that work perfectly in Linux/Android but either won't show at all or work horribly in Windows, and all devices say they work in Windows (they have windows specific keys). I have a cheap IR (or is it RF?) touchpad/keyboard combo that will work for about 10 minutes in Windows then will repeat the last pressed key multiple times, and the mouse will become choppy. I have a full-sized keyboard with an integrated trackpad that has 2 bluetooth radios and it drops out almost instantly after it connects to Windows, key presses lag by as much as 60 seconds and the trackpad lags horribly, but it works perfectly in Android, in fact I'm using it to type up this post. I just purchased another trackpad/mini keyboard combo (that was recommended by Lew from Unbox Therapy, IS11-BT05) and the freaking bluetooth adapter in Windows (which is integrated into my brand new Intel Skylake motherboard) doesn't detect it at all, yet it finds my roommates Roku 2 and my Nexus 6. I enabled search mode on the keyboard and enabled it on my Google Pixel C and it literally shows up in about a second and paired about 2 seconds after that with no password. The final device is actually the Dolphin Bar so I can use Wiimotes with the Dolphin (Wii) emulator, but that may be a problem with the knock-off remotes. To make it even more odd, I have been using wireless Logitech mice for about a decade and never had any issues, but then again those are most likely RF. There's no reason why these devices shouldn't work perfectly in Windows.

I've also tried a USB bluetooth adapter and it isn't any better. Why is the Windows bluetooth stack such garbage? This one reason why I switched to Linux years ago and pretty much everything I own runs Linux, except for my Gaming/HTPC PC (the one I'm talking about in this post).

Hi guys,

I am trying to set a custom lock screen for my Win10 RedStone update on OOBE mode. I am messing with it for last 15 days and found no luck changing it. I have found registry keys which are responsible for it, but I cant manage to get it working. It always select stock image after OOBE.

FINALLY got Win 10 usable again

$

With each new distribution of a major build, Windows 10 has needed serious re-tweaking.  Some software - such as Aero Glass for Win 10 - doesn't work right at first and so the turning of the system into something actually worth using necessarily has to wait.

So here we are, at the end of October 2016, and I can state that just in the past couple of days I have finally gotten the "Anniversary Update" - 14393.351 - into shape to where I consider it actually usable.  What's that, 4 months after release?  This is why it's better to have operating system releases only every few years.

Well, I have to qualify that...  I still have several beta bits of Aero Glass for Win 8+ running, and beta firewall software, but it's finally acceptable to use.

Listed here are some of the things needed to achieve sufficient usability as a serious desktop system that's App-free and divorced from the cloud, yet all hangs together.  These sound deceptively simple, but the devil is in the details.

  • Tweaking to increase privacy and control of Windows Updates.
  • Disabling of UAC.
  • 3rd party software for Start menu, deny-by-default firewall, various maintenance tasks.
  • Setup of features not enabled by default (e.g., System Restore, backup).
  • Desktop usability enhancement (e.g., Aero Glass, replacement Aero 7 theme, various other small tweaks).
  • Verification that needed applications still work.
  • Removal of all but the Settings App, removal of OneDrive, disabling of settings sync, use of only a local account.
  • Removal of many unnecessary scheduled jobs.
  • Reconfiguration of browser, augmentation with custom blacklists.

Win10Desktop.png

Things that even STILL make replacing Win 8.1 with it unacceptable for my use on actual hardware systems here at my business:

  • ATI has ceased including features I need in their current display drivers (e.g., per channel calibration).  I don't know whether a Catalyst driver suite from 2015 could work with the latest Win 10, but that's what I'm using on Win 8.1 now.
  • Media playing features are reduced, though most of the media I'd like to play so far seems to play in Media Player.
  • Even with all the tweaking, the Taskbar isn't quite as usable as with an older system, since themes can't change it.
  • Microsoft disrupts compatibility and stability far too often, even with my exercising manual control over updates.  I would need to set Windows Update to the CBB (Current Branch for Business) at the very least.

I continue to re-evaluate Windows 10 to determine whether I can move "up" to the latest OS, in order to stay current, compatible, etc., but for now this one stays on a VM as a curiosity only.  I had extra hope this time around, because with Win 8, upon the release of Win 8.1 a year later I thought it was good enough to move up to (and I'm glad I did).  I keep wishing that Microsoft will ultimately release something that improves the state of the art in computing again, but alas all they really seem to be doing is hanging new apps on the old kernel and making things less and less efficient.  I fear they've lost all the people who know how to do serious operating system work.

Trouble is, it just won't be viable to continue to run an old version of Windows forever.

System Restore seems to have stalled.

My Windows 10 (in place upgrade from 7) system has been freezing up on my for the past two weeks.  SFC /SCANNOW has not uncovered any errors, so I decided to do a system restore to a point in time before the problems started.

Yesterday, I ran System Restore, and after the "Finished" dialog was on screen for 3 hours, I assumed it has stalled and I powered the PC down.  Upon restarting Win10 alerted me that System Restore failed to complete and changes had not been applied.  So I re-started the System Restore process this AM at about 9:00, went away for a few hours, and checked in on it at 2PM when the restore process was still running.  Sometime after 2PM the System Restore dialog box has been displaying "Finished" with a solid green progress bar for about an hour and a half.  How long should I expect to wait for the restore process to complete?  Does it usually take 8 hours?  12?  24 hours, or what?

Dead win10 box - drive 'raw' format

$

After an unattended update, i found my win 10 box dead - it tries to run a diagnostic endlessly on boot. After about an hour i'm given the opportunity to run a DOS shell and but can't get far...

in DiskPart > List vol, I seem to have now developed an extra partition at c: labelled 'windows rese', 100 Mb in size. My original 2 Tb volume is listed as e: (NTFS format) and DiskPart reports this as a normal/healthy partition.

however running CHKDSK (with all the options) fails as it reports the partition to be RAW format, not NTFS as

Found some advice online and tried BOOTREC but that all fails as it can't find a windows volume and sfc/scannow fails as well (having set the volume to e: and the win directory to e:/windows).

I've not doubt there are bad sectors causing this but sadly haven't backed up the drive (i'll learn one day...) and was hoping to back up the stuff before getting a new drive.

very very grateful for any suggestions?

HI,

it's my second day with with windows 10. My experience until now is bad.

Does someone know How I can install only the updates I want for software I have and not have all MS updates ?

My only idea right now is to disable windows updates service and manual installed KB.

Thank for any ideas.

PS: Does windows 10 pro also do this nonsenses ?

Scheduled Tasks - Eliminating Most is a Good Thing

$

We've all seen lists of services and advice on which to disable, etc., but something I don't see discussed much is the list of Scheduled Tasks.

In the Task Scheduler there is a huge tree of hundreds of tasks that Microsoft has preset to do various things.

Depending on your personal needs for Windows 10, many can be disabled.  Lo and behold, doing so makes your system more controllable, and less apt to override changes you've made.  It only makes sense.

This is my list of scheduled tasks, from my Win 10 test system which completely shuns cloud integration and Apps entirely.  It's set up for pure traditional desktop operation and it really works well:

How to Permanently Get Rid of the Windows Defender Shield in the System Tray?

$

No matter what settings are thrown, no matter what tweaker apps have been used, the Windows Defender shield keeps showing back up in the "hidden" box of the notification area icons.

DefenderIconShows.png

Call me OCD, but even though the "hidden" box of icons is, well, hidden normally I don't ever want to see the Defender icon anywhere in there.  I'm of the opinion that any resource-using extras I don't need nor want should be removed.  I simply don't want the MSASCuiL.exe process running.

If I tweak the system with WinAero Tweaker, the icon can be hidden after a logoff/logon, but after the next system reboot it's back.  I think what's going on is that Windows Defender is more aggressive than ever in asserting itself.  I have been considering just eliminating it.

As I mentioned, the above seems to work - until a reboot.  Any ideas what to try to make it stay away permanently?

Windows Update causing MAC OS Network Shares Failure

$

Hi

For those interested running Windows 10 and iMACs with El Capitan or Sierra (only 2 flavours I can comment on).

My Win10 PC which happens to serve all my media around my home network was auto updated on 9/11/16. After which connecting to from Win10 to my iMACs was impossible constantly giving an incorrect credentials error on Win10. Took me a few days to track this down it turns out..........

Mac OS only responds to LAN network authentication level 2 requests from Windows. In Windows 10 this is turned off by default, I knew this and had previously set Windows 10 to Send NTLMv2 responses only to ensure that shared MAC folders were available to Win10 machines. The update on 9/11/16 reset this to default therby borking the shares and causing me several hours of frustrating digging about in network settings on Win10 and Mac OS.

If you have Win10 / Mac OS related sharing problems suddenly this is the fix.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options > "Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level" > ensure this is set to "Send NTLMv2 responses only"

Not sure exactly which of the three security updates for November I go reset my Network Security setting but one of them sure did. As a result of this and the aggravation caused I have disabled the Windows Update Service in services.msc I am fed up with windows updates screwing up perfectly good systems. I have better things to do than troubleshoot obscure windows settings that are reset by updates.

Windows Firewall and SIH Client "packages"?

$

I run a closed Windows Firewall, everything deleted. I explicity add what is needed, and turn it off if I'm not using it.

So it's DHCP and DNS, a blocklist of loads of IP ranges for MS stuff is added over the list as extra protection, and then apps I toggle on and off as needed.

I'll admit I've been tooling around lots today getting the 'ping' to work at various levels (a subnet rule and a global rule), so I've been opening and closing my custom firewall and the default firewall rules.

But I'm pretty sure I had new Firewall rules added (crypto service, update service, etc), and Windows had added them to basically get the update function to work.

I'm certain they were prefixed with "custom rule" then something like "crypto graphic service" etc

In my haste/shock at seeing these new rules I just selected and deleted immediately, while I should have really disconnected my machine and looked at them more closely.

I saw this behaviour a few days back with a new rule that had appeared for a Minecraft demo or something?

The rules included one for crypto services, another for windows update... basically it looked like a hit list of 4 or 5 rules that would be specifically needed for Windows Update to run.

Has anyone seen what SIH Client can do? After reading it's description it sounds exactly like this is the kind of task it could undertake to 'restore' Windows Update functionality?

I've disabled the task, but I'm now thinking if there are other tasks that check up on this task, and turn it on. Basically will I ever 'win'?
